un ponte pietra per pietra?

Marco Polo describes a bridge, stone by stone.

“But which is the stone that supports the bridge?” Kublai Khan asks.

“The bridge is not supported by one stone or another,” Marco answers,
“but by the line of the arch that they form.”

Kublai Khan remains silent, reflecting.
Then he adds: “Why do you speak to me of the stones?
It is only the arch that matters to me.”

Polo answers: “Without stones there is no arch.”
– Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

Kublai Kan rimase silenzioso, riflettendo.

Poi soggiunse: - Perché mi parli delle pietre? È solo dell’arco che mi importa.

Polo risponde: - Senza pietre non c’è arco.

Casa Malaparte is a house on the eastern side of the Isle of Capri, Italy. It is one of the best examples of Italian modern and contemporary architecture. The house was conceived around 1937 by the well-known Italian architect Adalberto Libera for Curzio Malaparte. Malaparte actually rejected Libera’s design and built the home himself with the help of Adolfo Amitrano, a local stonemason.

Joshua Tree House, Joshua Tree, California, 1988-1993

The house looks like the skeleton of a desert animal strewn among the enormous rocks. The curved concrete walls absorb the desert heat and release it when the temperature drops at night. The living spaces weave in and around the naturally-occurring boulders, and windows are positioned to optimize views of the moon and stars.

The Sea Organ is an architectural object and experimental musical instrument created by Nikola Bašić in Zadar, Croatia. It plays music by way of sea waves, wind and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps. The waves create somewhat random but harmonic sounds.
